South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) is the largest coal-producing company in India. It is a "Miniratna" (Category-I) Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Coal and operates as one of the eight fully owned subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL).
Technology and Sustainability
-
Surface Miners: Over 70% of SECL's opencast production now utilizes state-of-the-art "Surface Miners." These machines extract coal without the need for traditional drilling and blasting, which significantly reduces noise and air pollution (coal dust).
-
First Mile Connectivity (FMC): SECL has invested heavily in modern Coal Handling Plants (CHPs) with long conveyor belts and rapid loading systems (like the massive project at Dipka). This reduces the need for road transport via trucks, cutting down on carbon emissions.
-
Green Initiatives: The company has ambitious afforestation plans, targeting the plantation of millions of saplings, transforming closed opencast mines into green covers, and aggressively expanding its grid-connected and rooftop solar power capacity across its operational areas.
